CA GROWN Leafy Greens from California LGMA Members

An outbreak of E. coli linked to Romaine lettuce from Arizona has caused some confusion for consumers across the U.S., stemming from the fact that consumers often have no way to identify what growing region their Romaine lettuce and other leafy greens come from.

Labeling for Consumers

Members of the California Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement farm and harvest over 70% of the nation’s lettuce and leafy greens.  With the ongoing situation, and a need for consumers to know where their leafy greens come from, the CA LGMA has joined the Buy California Marketing Agreement which allows LGMA members to market their products with the consumer-friendly CA GROWN mark. The Mark identifies the origin of the product, but it is not a food safety certification.

In addition to LGMA members, grocery stores and restaurants who want their customers to know that the leafy greens they are selling are from California are authorized to use the CA GROWN mark. They can use it, for example, in-store ads, in-store signage, or on menus.
